Another category of tools available for forcible entry is the push/pull category. These tools have limited use in forcible entry, but in certain instances, such as breaking glass and opening walls or ceilings, they are the tools of choice. Pike PolePike poles and hooks give the firefighter a reach advantage when performing certain tasks. By using a pike pole to break a window, the firefighter is able to stay out of the way of falling glass. The pike pole also allows firefighters to remove shards of glass and the window frame from a relatively safe distance.

With the exception of the Roofman's Hook, which is all metal, pike poles and hooks should not be depended upon for leverage. Their strength is in pushing or pulling, not prying. If a lever is needed, select the appropriate prying tool. Handles of pike poles and hooks are easily broken by the application of inappropriate force.
